Pallet Jack Won’t Lift? 5 Checks Before You Buy Parts

A manual pallet jack that will not lift can have linkage, fluid, air, valve or hydraulic problems. Diagnose the symptom in the right order before buying parts.

Short answer: Separate three symptoms first: does it not rise at all, rise only with no load, or rise and then sink? Check the control/release linkage and obvious leaks before assuming the hydraulic unit is dead. Use the manufacturer procedure for fluid type, bleeding and adjustment.

“Won’t lift” sounds like one failure. It isn’t. The symptom is doing us a favor if we stop flattening every hydraulic problem into the same diagnosis. A jack that never moves, one that rises empty but not loaded, and one that rises then sinks are giving you different clues.

Safety first: remove the load before service, keep clear of raised forks, and never work underneath unsupported lifting components. Follow the manufacturer’s service procedure for the specific model.

1. Check the control linkage

Manual jacks typically use the handle lever to actuate a linkage that opens the release/lowering valve. If that linkage is misadjusted and holds the valve slightly open, pumping can send pressure right back where it came from.

This is why blindly adding fluid can waste time. If the lowering valve is being held open, more oil does not fix the command problem.

2. Look for evidence

Inspect the pump body, ram area and floor for hydraulic oil. External leakage does not identify the exact failed seal, but it changes the odds. A dry jack can still bypass internally; a wet jack has already volunteered one useful clue.

3. Verify fluid and bleeding procedure for the model

Low fluid or trapped air can prevent normal pressure generation. Do not assume every jack uses the same fill level or oil. Uline, for example, publishes model-specific troubleshooting/instruction material and parts diagrams for its pallet trucks. Use the actual manual if you can identify the unit.

4. Test under load carefully

If the jack raises fully with no load but fails with a realistic load well under its rated capacity, the problem is no longer “it goes up.” Pressure-holding components deserve more attention.

5. Decide whether diagnosis is worth more time

On a cheap generic manual jack, a complete replacement hydraulic assembly may make more sense than chasing internal valves. On a durable industrial jack with readily available parts, seals, wheels and linkage components can be worth fixing.

Resale rule: Buy a non-working jack at a non-working price until you personally verify the cheap fix. “Probably just needs fluid” is a hypothesis, not an asset.
