Used Electric Pallet Jack Battery: The Risk That Can Kill the Deal
Before buying a used electric pallet jack, verify battery voltage, chemistry, compartment, connector, charger and real runtime. An unknown battery is a liability.
This is the nasty part of a cheap electric pallet jack: the frame can look fine while the most expensive uncertainty is quietly sitting in the battery compartment.
“24 volt” does not mean “one universal battery”
Toyota’s 8HBW23 is a 24-volt truck, but Toyota’s spec sheet shows a battery weight range from 200 to 660 lb and multiple battery-compartment sizes. Raymond’s 8210 is also a 24-volt pallet truck and offers wet-cell or sealed battery options with an onboard charger system. Crown’s WP series offers multiple battery choices as well.
The voltage label is only the beginning. Chemistry, amp-hour capacity, compartment dimensions, connector, cable location, charger profile and minimum battery weight can matter.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is the exact truck model?
- What battery is installed now?
- What charger is included?
- How long does the truck run after a full charge under actual work?
- Does the truck show any battery or controller fault?
- Has the battery been sitting discharged?
- Can the seller provide photos of the battery label, connector and compartment?
“It charges” is not a capacity test
A charger can complete a cycle on a weak battery. That does not tell you how much usable energy the pack delivers under load. Runtime and voltage behavior under use matter much more to the economics.
Battery weight changes transport too
For the Toyota 8HBW23, the published battery weight range spans 460 lb from minimum to maximum. Crown’s WP 3200 spec lists the truck itself at 715 lb less battery for a 48-inch-fork configuration. So even when two trucks share the same model family, battery configuration can materially change transport weight.
How to price an unknown battery
Do not value an unknown pack as a healthy pack. Build a risk reserve into the maximum purchase price. The more proprietary or poorly documented the system, the bigger that reserve should be.
What about converting to lithium?
Do not assume a drop-in conversion is safe or supported because the nominal voltage matches. Charger profile, battery-management system, truck controller, physical fit, ballast/minimum battery weight and manufacturer approval all matter. Check the specific truck and battery system.
